Breast Cancer Awareness Month: what you need to know, from a breast surgeon’s view

Every October we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to amplify knowledge, reduce fear, and encourage proactive health care. As a breast surgeon, I see firsthand how early detection and awareness can make a difference in outcomes and lives.
In Australia, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women (aside from non-melanoma skin). Breast cancer also remains one of the leading causes of cancer death, although thankfully survival has improved dramatically over the last decades.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s talk about how to be breast aware (not “self-obsessed”), know the signs, understand screening, and take steps toward peace of mind.
